About RestartCrew

RestartCrew is a small, free community for people whose work has been changed or ended by AI. This page covers why it exists, what is actually in it, and how crews are put together.

RestartCrew is a small, private support community for people navigating AI-driven job loss. Members who opt in are placed into private crews of 4–8 people in a similar profession and situation — manually, by a real person, not by an algorithm. It is free to join, and members can participate anonymously.

Why We Exist

Work is being automated across a lot of professions at once — writing, analysis, design, support — and the people it happens to are usually told it was something else: a restructure, an efficiency programme, a consolidation. That makes it awkward to talk about, and easy to end up working through it alone. RestartCrew exists so there is somewhere to compare notes with people the same thing happened to.

What We Offer

A moderated forum, discussion rooms grouped by profession, and — if you opt in — a private crew of people in a similar situation. You can write about what happened, ask people in your own line of work what they actually did next, and hear from someone a few months further along. It works the same whether you were laid off last week, expect to be, or are still in the job and watching it change.

How It Works

  1. Sign up and tell us your profession and where you are in the journey

  2. Tick the box during onboarding if you want to be placed in a crew

  3. A real person puts you in a private crew of 4–8 people in a similar profession and situation, once enough people have signed up to form one — there is no matching algorithm, which is also why it can take a while

  4. Talk in your crew's private space, and in the public forum and profession rooms alongside it

Our Values

  • Empathy first — nobody has to justify how hard they are finding it.
  • Privacy respected — anonymous or public is your call, and the guidelines forbid speculating about anyone who chose anonymity.
  • Practical focus — what someone actually did, not what you should have done differently.
  • Community safety — clear guidelines, enforced by people rather than filters.
  • Forward-looking — the point is working out what comes next, not only processing what happened.

Who Built This

RestartCrew is run by hand: a person reads the signups, puts the crews together, and moderates the forum. We're a small team committed to creating the community we wished existed when the world started changing.

About the community, answered honestly

Who runs RestartCrew?
RestartCrew is a small, early-stage community run by its founder. Crews are put together by hand, moderation is done by people rather than filters, and there is no company behind it deciding who you meet.
How big is the community right now?
Small — a handful of members. RestartCrew is genuinely early, and we would rather tell you that than publish a member count designed to look impressive. If you join now you are one of the first people here, which shapes what the community becomes.
Do I have to join a crew to use RestartCrew?
No. Crews are opt-in. You can use the public forum and the profession rooms without ever being placed in a crew, and you can change your mind later in your settings.
How long does it take to be placed in a crew?
It depends on how many other people in a similar profession and situation have signed up, because crews are formed manually by a real person rather than by an algorithm. In a community this size that can take a while — we will not put you in a group that does not fit just to fill it faster.
What does it cost?
Nothing. RestartCrew is free to join and free to use, with no paid tier and nothing held behind a paywall.
