Explaining the gap to future employers — what's working?

I was laid off due to AI automation eight months ago. Interviews are coming up and I'm dreading the "what have you been doing" question. I've been retraining but I feel embarrassed about the gap. What's actually landing with hiring managers right now?

The reframe that works: stop treating the gap as something to explain away, and present it as a decision you made. Interviewers hearing "laid off due to AI automation" in 2026 do not think "bad employee". They think "restructuring" — it is in the news weekly. What they are actually probing with the gap question is: did this person drift, or did they act? So the answer is short and forward-looking: "My role was automated away eight months ago. I decided to use the time deliberately — I have been retraining in X and building Y. I would rather arrive in my next role with sharper tools than have grabbed the first thing available." Three rules: keep the past to thirty seconds, never sound apologetic (you did nothing wrong), and land on what you can do now. Retraining IS the answer to the gap question — you are already doing the right thing, you just need to say it plainly. We posted a full set of interview scripts as a separate thread in this category ("How to talk about an AI-related layoff in interviews") — script 2 there is built for exactly your situation.
