What skills are actually worth learning right now?

Everyone says "learn AI" but that's not specific enough. I'm a marketing specialist with 8 years of experience. What concrete skills should I be building in 2025 that are AI-adjacent but not easily replaced? Looking for real answers, not generic advice.

Good instinct to ask for specifics — "learn AI" is useless advice. For a marketing specialist with 8 years of experience, we would prioritize in this order: 1. Marketing analytics. The single most defensible add-on: GA4 or similar, spreadsheet fluency, and enough SQL to pull your own numbers. Judgment about what the numbers mean is your moat — tools produce charts, they do not decide what to do. 2. AI-assisted execution, end to end. Not a course — practice. Take one real campaign brief and run the whole thing with AI in the loop (research, copy variants, creative briefs, reporting) and document your workflow. "Here is how I ship 3x faster" is a portfolio piece, and vendor academies (Google Skillshop, HubSpot Academy) give free certifications that back it up. 3. Positioning and strategy. The hardest thing to automate in marketing is deciding what to say to whom and why. Lean harder into strategy, customer research and messaging — eight years of pattern recognition is exactly what junior-plus-AI teams lack. 4. Lifecycle/CRM ownership. Email flows, segmentation, retention. Unglamorous, measurable, and consistently in demand. What we would NOT do: generic AI certificates with no work product attached, or panic-pivoting into a technical field you do not want. One portfolio move beats everything: run a real campaign for a small nonprofit or local business, free, with your new stack — then you have current numbers to talk about in every interview.
